Before the economy went belly up- I sold just about any kind of jewelry on eBay. Since things aren't selling I have narrowed my focus down to jewelry I really like and that sells. Lately I have been selling a lot of Victorian jewelry, vintage lockets, cameos (real and faux or resin), costume and sterling rings, vintage sterling charms and bracelets, and sterling. It seems like at least for me- the market has really tapered off for rhinestone jewelry and signed costume pieces.

Here's a recent piece I sold. I love the shape of this old locket and the coastal scene is just beautiful.

I am still here- really...

The reason I have not posted any new pictures is because I was working on a new website for Vintage Jewelry Pictures off of blogger (blogspot). Actually my husband is working on it and I did not want to have to transfer any more posts then necessary. I thought I would have the new site up by now- but after the holidays things just got so crazy.

First my husband thought he would make me a fancy Drupal website- but after about two weeks of development he realized he was making it more complex then need be. Just last week he agreed that what would be best would be a blog on Wordpress. He started work on making the template more to my liking- only to get the flu this weekend. So instead of being up and running- here I am still posting on this old blog on blogspot.

Not that I don't appreciate Google blogger- I do. It's simple to use and free- it's just that the comments on here drive me batty and I want a little more flexibility.

If I knew it would take over a month for my new site to be ready I would have kept posting- because oh the pretty jewelry we could have looked at together. Hopefully- I'll be up on my new site soon- it'll still have the same web address so it will be easy to find.

I missed you all & posting the jewelry pictures.

I photographed these beautiful signed Garner clip on earrings today. This is what they look like in natural light. Garne is considered rare vintage jewelry and from what is know about the company they were in business for a brief period in the mid forties to possibly the mid 1950's.

Old Vintage Egyptian Revival Locket

This is a beautiful example of old vintage Egyptian Revival - it features a beautifully painted bust of a Pharaoh on top of an ornate, octagonal sliding locket. Say that seven times fast, while you are trying to say that... I'll be saying "I won't fall in love with the inventory..." over and over. Sigh... I love this piece.

Vintage Florenza Three Strand Cameo Choker

Since I moved the house around- I no longer have access to the same photography area I set up. I generally like to use a lot of natural light for photographing my inventory too. Unfortunately there is not an abundance of natural light during Winters in Wisconsin. As you can see from these pictures I am getting used to my new photography area I have set up. Some of the pictures are coming out too dark and and when I use the flash- it washes them out. I will get it down though. It takes practice to take good close ups of jewelry. Anytime you change a camera or start shooting in a new area with a different lighting, you should expect some time to adjust.

Regardless- this necklace is a signed Florenza gold tone, three strand choker style necklace and it's much better looking in person!

Up All Night... Vintage Owl Necklace with Moonglow Eyes

This weekend I moved bedrooms. The master bedroom which is really pretty is on the bottom floor. We had two of our school age sons sharing that room since we moved here several years ago. My husband and I were on the top floor so we could be with our youngest children and be on the same floor as the nursery. It seemed much safer to not have to walk up and down the stairs in the middle of the night with screaming babies. Needless to the say the top floor of our house is not as pretty- in fact it is butt ugly.

My husband and I have been staying in a room for three years that is green and has purple butterflies on the wall. The previous occupants were two little girls if I recall correctly. If you are wondering why we just didn't paint the walls up there... we only had 3 children when we moved into our new house 3 & 1/2 years ago. Now we have five! Painting during pregnancy and when there are babies in the house is not my to my liking. Now though- our youngest is 1 and I finally feel like a human and less of a cow, so it's time for home improvements.

If you are wondering what this has to do with jewelry it doesn't... it just an explanation as to why the postings are sparse lately. I thought I would pop on here on Sunday and make a quick post, but it took longer then expected to have my two sons situated upstairs with no problems going back to school on Monday. I was up pretty late this weekend- and not online much. I feel like a night owl- kind of like this beautiful vintage owl necklace. Only his eyes are a beautiful moon glow yellow... mine are bulgy and red!

Vanda Jewelry Cameo Pendant & Ring

Here's a 1972 Christmas advertisement for Vanda Beauty Counselors.

It reads:

I am not familiar with Vanda Beauty products but the jewelry looks suspiciously familiar. Look close in the corner you will see a Cameo Perfume Ring for $8.50 and a Floral Cameo Pendant - 24 carat gold plated , contains solid gel perfume $16.00. Now I know why it seems so familiar it reminds me of Avon and their line of solid perfume cameos and pendants.

Black Plastic Flapper Brooch

This brooch is really opulent in person and flashy- you can just imagine the flapper who wore this. I bet she was a really racy gal. I included a video of flapper fashion from the 1920's for your viewing pleasure. In the beginning of the video you can see some really flashy jewelry, there's also some pretty racy burlesque style dancing, and a woman getting her hair bobbed. ENJOY!

Weiss Maragarita Rhinestone Christmas Tree Brooch

This vintage Christmas tree brooch looks sort of plain at first. However, when you look at it closely- the first thing you will notice is the beautiful margarita rhinestones. Margarita rhinestones have the scalloped edges and look sort of like flowers.

This brooch features a couple watermelon colored margarita rhinestones in the bottom row. When the light catches them - WOW. This brooch is signed Weiss and one that vintage Christmas Tree brooch collectors will definitely want in there collection.

1975 Sarah Coventry Love Story Ring

This cute ring is called "Love Story," and it can be found in the 1975 Sarah Coventry catalog. These rings are presumably birth stone or anniversary rings- each featuring two rhinestone hearts with silver tone leaf accents. Depending on your birth or anniversary month you pick the corresponding ring. This particular ring has pink stones and in the catalog it states: October - Rose Zircon.

Octobers birthstone is the opal and the substitute is pink tourmaline, so I suppose Sarah Coventry felt any old pink stone would do. Really- it doesn't matter to me, because the ring is so cute I would wear regardless of having the proper matching birthstones. My birth stone is emerald and I get tired of wearing green- so I wouldn't mind having the whole collection to wear.

Vintage 1940's Eisenberg Peacock Demi Parure

This Eisenberg demi parure is called "Peacock" and dates from 1945 - 1955. It is signed on the back of the huge pendant and the earrings with the large capital "E." The original hang tag has the price of $22.50 on it, which I assume would make it kind of pricey in the late forties. When I first acquired it- I thought it was one of the gaudiest things I had ever seen, since then I have learned to appreciate it more. For the record if you are interested in this piece it sold last week, but I still thought it prudent to get the pictures up for collector's who might comes across these pieces and not know the name of the set.

Yesterday I spent all day trying to photograph old adverts for this blog and elsewhere, but no matter what I did their was a glare or some other nonsense which made my pictures complete garbage. Here's a pair of Sarah Coventry clip on earrings that feature baroque pearls. A baroque pearl is basically just an irregular pearl. Freshwater pearls are often baroque but you will see it in faux pearls set in vintage jewelry as well.

Mother of pearl brooches that were personalized with the owner's name such as this one above were popular in Victorian and Edwardian times. However, I have seen some mop name brooches that date from as late as the 1930's early 40's. Typically the gold wire is not karat gold and is usually gold fill. Besides being personalized with names, brooches with "Mother" on them can be commonly found.

I really don't know that this piece of jewelry is vintage, but I think it's really cute. For one the front is a very pretty faux stained glass floral arrangement that looks really neat. Two if you flip over the back it looks like a foiled Reese's Peanut Butter cup. For the record- I really like candy.

This is the smallest ring I have ever had in my inventory. It's not your typical child sized ring and I can't even get it to fit over the tip of my pinky. In fact it does not fit my 1 year old sons finger- it was made for a newborn. You can see in the top picture that it was cut- probably at the time of removal. Too it's very ornate for such a small little thing... and it's marked 10KP. Which for the record stands for 10 K PLUMB (meaning exact weight gold). Many vintage jewelry buyers confuse the P to mean plate. Gold plate is usually designated as GEP (or gold electro plate).

That red jewelry sells best... I don't remember the reason, but bidders and buyers tend to pay more for red jewelry. In practice I have noticed that auctions for red rhinestone jewelry often close with higher ending bids then other similar quality vintage jewelry that is not red. I wonder if jewelry designers find this is the case as well?

Is red jewelry more popular? What do you think?

Old VIntage Repousse Brooch

This very old brooch was made using a technique called repousse - the alternative to this technique is chasing. As you can see the back was hammered out to make the design work on the front and then the brooch was painted.

Vintage Blue Painted Art Deco Earrings

I really have a fondness for Art Deco- it's a very opulent look. That's probably why I like dress clips and I like these earrings. What's really cool about these, is they still retain the blue paint for the most part. Many times you'll find that really old vintage jewelry has lost all the paint or enamel original to the piece. So I think these are kind of special despite the fact that someone spilled rubber cement all over the lower fronts. Luckily I am able to remove quite a bit of it.

These earrings are signed Sarah Coventry and are called Enchanted Forest. Here's something cool about the earrings- they are labeled right and left. I have heard that if you don't wear the properly matched clip ons on the ears they are meant for, they can be uncomfortable sort of like shoes. This is one of those bracelets I want to hoard and treasure for ever in my secret vintage jewelry pirate booty stash... 1937 Enamel Shield Brooch

This brooch has a really nice regal or military look and I can't actually say for sure it is from 1937. I can tell you that the patent number on the back for the hardware is a patent number from 1937. Patent numbers can be really helpful- we know then that the brooch wasn't made before 1937 and that it fits in with other war time jewelry of this nature.

Vintage Avon Faux Pearl Perfume Locket Ring

Remember vintage Avon perfumes, sure you do? Avon perfumes were always really smelly and came in really neat decorative bottles or inside jewelry like pendant and rings. Here's an Avon perfume locket ring and it still has some of the stinky goodness inside... I assume that people clean out the perfume and use the rings to store photographs or mementos. I could be wrong though and there might be someone who collects the perfume!

Vintage Goldette Craft Piece

This piece is actually broken- it's an unsigned Goldette reverse carved brooch with stick pin charms around it. There should actually be several more charms on top. I keep thinking I will do something crafty with this piece so I hang on to it. I believe I mentioned the Goldette charms to you in a previous post- the snake charm with her little egg in her nest is featured on this brooch- that's my favorite Goldette charm.

By the way- when sunset comes tonight- watch our for little spooks and goblins, be sure to feed them lots of candy and Happy Halloween!

Vintage 1970's Third Century Lantern Pendant

I listed this on eBay as a Gothic Halloween Lantern- but actually this super cool pendant came with a certificate of authenticity that stated it was the Third Century Lantern Pendant and is an accurate and authentic,miniature re-creation of the Third Lantern, dedicated by President Gerald R. Ford at the Old North Church in Boston, Massachusetts on April 18, 1975.

Yeah whatever... the buyer agreed that it was the sweetest little gothic Halloween lantern pendant ever!

I really love vintage Goldette jewelry. I can generally spot Goldette a mile away- whether it is signed or not. This piece is not signed, but it has the definitive Goldette charms that were so popular then as well as now. For the record I have a favorite charm- that's the snake with the egg in it's nest. Unfortunately- this slide bracelet doesn't feature that charm... I'll have to point it out the next time I see it.

Victorian Era Mother of Pearl Pocket Knife Pin

Vintage Vargas Cuff Bracelet

This is a signed Vargas cuff bracelet. I don't typically come across Vargas pieces very often- they tend to be on the rarer side and collectors snap them up quickly because of their good looks.

I don't think much is known about the Vargas Manufacturing Co. Depending on what resource you use, different jewelry experts say Vargas starting making high quality costume jewelry in 1945 and ended making jewelry anywhere from the mid- eighties to 1996. I have also seen this bracelet dated online from anywhere from the 1940's to 1960's.

This pretty pendant is an early plastic depiction of a basket of flowers set on top of a wooden pendant. A bale was screwed in on top and the pendant is on an older sterling chain. The estate sale tag dates it to 1910 - but who can be for sure.

What is the diference between a cameo, an intaglio, and a reverse carved cameo?

I am curious, do you know, or how do you tell, if a glass cameo is an Intaglio cameo. I have a glass cameo that I have had for a number of years, and have been wondering about it all the time...

A cameo is carved generally from shell or certain types of stone. The portrait usually of a lone woman or a female bust is carved in relief from a background of another color. Below is an antique shell cameo I sold last year on eBay.

An intaglio- which is sometimes called an intaglio cameo is where the carving is below the background. The background is higher and the design or portrait is sunken lower into the medium usually glass. The intaglio came before the cameo and is based on the practice of stamping papers with a wax seal. Think of the process. The wax is dribbled on the paper and then you place the seal on the wax thereby making a raised impression. If you take an intaglio piece of jewelry you could theoretically do the same- although cleaning the wax off it could be messy.This cameo below is done intaglio style and although hard to tell you would be able to stick your finger into the impression of the woman's portrait.

A reversed carved piece of jewelry, sometimes referred to as a reversed carved cameo is when the design work is carved into the back of the the glass piece. The design work is then seen from the front which is a smooth surface. It may be a little hard to tell but this is currently my only example in my inventory of a reverse carved piece of jewelry. The design in this stick pin was carved from the back and the front is a smooth glass surface.

I hope this helps illustrate the differences.

I have a thing for real Victorian jewelry... I say "real," because a lot of buyers on eBay don't seem to know the difference between real Victorian jewelry and what is called "Victorian style."
Avon is not Victorian, and real Victorian pieces don't look perfectly manufactured. Take this lovely beaded mourning bracelet for instance. If you look closely you can see the variations in the glass beads. This lends to the character and the uniqueness of the piece and makes it even more special.

Did you ever stop to think about mourning jewelry? The Victorians didn't have a lot of pictures or mementos of loved ones like we do. A mourning piece was a treasured memento of a loved one gone, whether it was a hair locket, an engraved watch fob, or like this beaded mourning bracelet.

Sterling Cameo Ring with Peasant Girl

One of my biggest rules in selling vintage jewelry on eBay is

"Don't fall in love with the inventory!"

However, some pieces make that rule hard to live by- for example this beautiful sterling ring with a red cameo inset. The peasant girl in the cameo is just beautiful and unique- I was really hard pressed to sell this ring, but at least I still have pictures.
